Gastrointestinal (GI) refers to the digestive system's passageway, or tract, that runs from the mouth to the anus. The GI tract includes the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. It also includes accessory organs like the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, which produce digestive juices and enzymes to help digest food and liquids.
As food and liquids are swallowed, digested, absorbed, and leave the body as feces, they travel through the GI tract. Some symptoms of GI disorders include: Constipation, Diarrhea, Gas and bloating, Abdominal pain, and Rectal pain or bleeding.
Stress, worrying, and anxiety can also cause GI symptoms, like stomach discomfort, but they're usually temporary and not serious. However, chronic stress and anxiety can take a toll on the digestive system and could lead to more serious, long-term stomach problems.
